Derry GAA has led the tributes to the late Colm Mulholland who passed away on Friday aged 96.

The Lavey clubman starred in his county’s run to the All-Ireland senior football championship final in 1958, winning an Ulster title with the Oak Leafers in the same year.

He represented Derry for 13 years in the 1950s and 60s, with the county board releasing a statement this morning describing him as “a Rolls-Royce centre-half-back and a proud Lavey man".

The Derry GAA statement in full reads: “Derry GAA is saddened to learn of the passing of one of our greatest Gaelic footballers, Colm Mulholland.

“Colm Mulholland represented Derry at senior level for thirteen years, displaying his trademark flamboyance throughout the 1950s and early 1960s. An Ulster Senior Football Championship winner in 1958, a Rolls-Royce centre-half-back, and a proud Lavey man, Colm was recognised throughout Ireland as one of the leading footballers of his generation.

“His passing is a reminder of the great legacy that has been passed on to our current players - one we are deeply proud of.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Colm's family circle and the Gaels of Erin's Own, Lavey, where he served as honorary club president.

“Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”
